What Is Ovulation?
Ovulation is the process in a woman’s menstrual cycle when a mature ovarian follicle releases an egg. This typically occurs around the middle of the menstrual cycle, roughly two weeks before menstruation begins. Ovulation is triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), which causes the follicle to rupture and release the egg into the fallopian tube. If sperm is present in the fallopian tube, fertilization of the egg may occur, leading to pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the egg is reabsorbed into the body or passes out with the menstrual flow. Ovulation is a key event in the reproductive process, marking the most fertile time in a woman’s cycle.
